Just a Minute is a smoking cessation app built around the Circadian Disruption Intervention (CDI) method. This policy describes exactly what data the app collects, why, and how it is handled.
The short version: the app collects anonymous session data to help you track your smoking pattern. It does not collect your name, email address, or any information that could identify you as a person.
What we collect
| Data | Why we collect it |
|---|---|
| Anonymous user ID | A randomly generated UUID assigned on first launch. Not linked to your name, email, or device ID. Used only to associate your sessions with each other. |
| Session timestamps | Six time markers per session: when a craving began, when you pressed Ready, when the timer started, when the timer expired, when you flicked the lighter, and when you closed the session. These are the core measurement of the CDI protocol — the inter-dose interval. |
| Location (latitude, longitude, accuracy) | Recorded once at the start of each session. Used to map where your smoking habit lives. Collection stops the moment you close the app. |
| Weather at session location | Temperature and general conditions, derived from your location via a public weather API. Helps contextualize patterns (e.g. indoor vs. outdoor behavior in different seasons). |
| CDI phase and delay | Whether you are in the baseline week (no delay) or the protocol phase (one-minute delay), and the length of the delay in seconds. Used to track your progress through the method. |
Location data
The app requests "When In Use" location permission — meaning location is only accessible while the app is open on your screen. The moment you close the app, location access stops.
In Gerald's terms: The dock cameras only run while the truck is in the bay. We don't track where the truck goes between deliveries. That's none of our business.
Your exact coordinates are stored in our database alongside the session record, but they are tied only to your anonymous user ID — not to your name, phone number, or Apple ID.
You can revoke location permission at any time in iOS Settings → Just a Minute → Location. The app will continue to function; sessions will simply be recorded without location data.
What we do not collect
Just a Minute does not collect:
- Your name, email address, or phone number
- Your Apple ID or any other account credentials
- Health records, HealthKit data, or biometric data
- Contacts, photos, camera, or microphone
- Background location (we never track you between sessions)
- Advertising identifiers or any tracking IDs
- Browsing history or data from other apps
How data is stored and secured
Session data is stored in Supabase, a cloud database infrastructure provider. Data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest. Your anonymous user ID and session records are stored together; no personal information is ever attached to that record.
Supabase is used as infrastructure only — they have no right to use your session data for any purpose other than providing database services.
Data sharing
We do not sell your data. We do not share your data with advertisers, data brokers, or marketing platforms.
Session data may be used in aggregate, anonymized form for research into the CDI method and nicotine cessation outcomes. No individual session is ever published or shared in identifiable form.
Data retention and deletion
Session records are retained for as long as the app is in operation. Because your data is tied to an anonymous ID and not to any personal account, there is no login to delete. To request deletion of your session data, email us at lucian@lucian.us with the subject line "Data Deletion Request." We will delete all records associated with your device's anonymous ID within 30 days.
Children
Just a Minute is intended for adult smokers. The app is not directed at children under 17, and we do not knowingly collect data from anyone under that age.
Changes to this policy
If we make material changes to how we handle data, we will update the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. For significant changes, we will also include a notice in the app on next launch.
